Overview

The word “Shirodhara” is derived from two Sanskrit terms:

  • Shira = Head
  • Dhara = Continuous flow

During therapy, the rhythmic pouring of warm liquid over the forehead stimulates the region between the eyebrows (often associated with the “third eye” or relaxation center). This area corresponds anatomically to important nerve endings and may influence the hypothalamus — the brain center that regulates stress hormones.

In Ayurvedic terms:

  • Vata = Governs nervous system & movement (linked with anxiety and insomnia)
  • Pitta = Governs metabolism & heat (linked with irritability and anger)
Shirodhara helps calm aggravated Vata and Pitta, promoting mental clarity and emotional balance.

FAQs — Shirodhara

Does Shirodhara really help with sleep problems?

Yes. Shirodhara activates the parasympathetic nervous system (relaxation response), which helps reduce stress hormones and promotes deeper, more restful sleep. Many patients report improvement within 5–7 sessions.

How many sessions are required?

For stress and mild anxiety, 5–7 sessions may be sufficient. Chronic insomnia or long-standing conditions may require 7–14 sessions depending on individual constitution (Prakriti) and severity.

Is the therapy safe?

When performed under trained Ayurvedic supervision, Shirodhara is generally safe. Proper temperature control and correct patient selection are essential to avoid discomfort or side effects.

Can it help with high blood pressure?

It may help in stress-induced hypertension by promoting relaxation. However, patients should continue prescribed medications and consult their physician before altering treatment.

Will the oil cause hair fall or scalp issues?

No. Medicated oils are selected according to scalp type and condition. In fact, Shirodhara often improves scalp nourishment and reduces stress-related hair fall.

Can Shirodhara be done at home?

It is not recommended without professional supervision. Correct oil selection, temperature control, duration, and patient monitoring are important for safety and effectiveness.
